Although it is a very touchy subject and unbelievably scientific it’s a topic that needs full attention and at least, some clarity. The research on the effects of CBD AND CANCER cells has been a leading project for some worlds top laboratories for years now, and the evidence is overwhelmingly positive,
In this post I will be going over the process and evidence of how CBD /THC works and how it kills cancer cells, unfortunately there is no way to break it down without sounding like a medical journal, its very interesting but highly technical, the researchers are getting a handle on the process and starting to share their information, which is a good thing moving forward.
The first thing we need to understand is how our body works, how we process and regulate our intake, and how we naturally control a healthy balance within our system. In 1992 working at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem Raphael Mechoulam working with William Devane and Dr. Lumir Hanus. Came a crossed a series of receptors located throughout our body, in fact, all living things have been found to have an ECS -endocannabinoid system.
This system is in charge of self-regulating our daily health and well-being, it is the most widespread system in our body, research is fairly new but recent breakthroughs and law changes have led to a huge surge in worldwide research and interest, almost to the point of a new field of medicine.
What is cancer?
Cancer is a name given to a large group of diseases caused by abnormal cell growth. Normal cells are continually growing to divide and die. When cells begin to grow out of control and not die they can invade other tissue, most often forming a tumor. Cancer cells can travel to other places in the body this process is called metastasis, traveling through the bloodstream of lymph vessels.
Cancer is considered a genetic disease, caused by changes to our genes and the way our cells function, some of these changes can be inherited, some just come with life and lifestyle. There are 100s of kinds of cancer usually named for the place or organ where they are formed.
Here is where things get complex, (biochemistry) let’s have a look, all cells have a group of sphingolipids (Sphingolipids are a class of lipids containing a backbone of sphingoid bases, a set of aliphatic amino alcohols that includes sphingosine. They were discovered in brain extracts in the 1870s and were named after the mythological sphinx because of their enigmatic nature.) these manage the life and death of the cell.
Controlling the life and death of the cell is called Sphingolipid Rheostat. If internal ceramide (a signaling metabolite of sphingosine-1-phosphate) is high, then cell death is imminent, If ceramide is low, the cell is strong and healthy, if THC connects to the cannabinoid receptor on a cancer cell, it increases ceramide synthesis causing the death of that cell.
A normal healthy cell does not produce ceramide when THC is present so it is not affected by the cannabinoid.
The cancer cell dies because of a little shift in mitochondria. (Mitochondria are structures within cells that convert the energy from food into a form that cells can use. Each cell contains hundreds to thousands of mitochondria, which are located in the fluid that surrounds the nucleus (the cytoplasm). When ceramide starts to build up so does the sphingolipid rheostat breaking down the cell’s permeability to cytochrome C( a protein used for energy) The cytochrome c is pushed out of the mitochondria, killing the source of energy for the cell.
Ceramide also places stress on a cancer cells nucleus generating a protein called p53, its job is to alter the calcium in the mitochondria, and it disrupts the cells digestive system, interfering with nutrient uptake starving the cell, leaving no way the cancer cell will survive.
This process works most efficiently by accumulating ceramide in the system, taking therapeutic amounts of CBD and THC, steadily, over a period, keeps the pressure on this cancer cell death.
We know that CBD/THC are interchangeable in our bodies, when called upon from stress or illness, and we need more than we can produce, our bodies activate and mimic exo-cannabinoids, if the stress is short term the treatment can be as well, but if the stress is sustained (like cancer) the treatment must also be sustained keeping pressure on the ailment until you get back to a place of even health or homeostatic.
CBD usually gravitates toward the CB2 reactor in the spleen, the base of our bodies immune system, from where they seek out and kill cancer cells.
THC and CBD cannabinoids have the ability to kill cancer cells directly, they can hijack various pathways that inhibit tumor growth.
Certain countries are far more advanced in the use of CBD/THC, here in the USA the door is cracked but far from open, if you are interested in the most advanced progress in this field I would recommend researching- Israel, Netherlands, Uruguay, Czech Republic, Canada or Spain. These countries are by far the most cutting edge in regards to research and development, to the point that we (USA) send our best to do research in their facilities.
Most states in the US that have a medical cannabis program allow cancer treatment with cannabis-based options the list so far looks like this
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Main, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia. With Washington D, C, and Maryland allowing limited use.
Medical research is a rapidly evolving science, cancer is on the top of the list, although we know a great deal about it, we’re still in our infancy on understanding and treating it.
Chemotherapy is the most common treatment depending on the stage and severity, just the sound of that word brings fear, but that doesn’t need to be the case, it works and has a successful track record.
Moving forward to new technics and various combinations of modern medicine we are finding a place for CBD/TCH, as a viable source for a cure and or a supplement for cancer and treatment, CBD is being used to help ease the side effects of Chemotherapy and help to maintain pressure on cancer cells.
CBD and cancer is a topic that seemly could fill the internet, new information is coming forth hourly and research is worldwide from video to testimonials to daily breakthroughs. If you have or know someone who has a form of cancer, talk to your doctor, do some research, keep an open mind. In this day and age, the treatment options and success rates are very positive, keep your head up and stay positive.
If you are in a country where CBD is prevalent and have experience pro or con, please help us out and leave a comment with your experience.
I hope this post helped you understand a very basic breakdown of CBD and cancer cells, I understand it barely is scratch on the surface of the topic, but never the less its a start.
